English Football News: Hannibal Suspended for Misconduct; Guardiola Insists 'Defence Has to Improve'

In the latest English football updates, a significant midfielder was given a substantial suspension, a manager has singled out a player's errors to make an argument, and the Manchester City manager has demanded defensive improvements following a chaotic win.

1. Mejbri Handed Four-Match Suspension and Fine

The Clarets' player Hannibal Mejbri has been given a four-game suspension and a financial penalty following improper behaviour in a recent fixture versus Leeds United. The Football Association confirmed the player faced an independent disciplinary panel following allegations where he spat in the direction of away supporters around the 67th mark of a 2-0 victory by Burnley.

An FA release read: “An independent disciplinary panel has punished the Hannibal Mejbri for misconduct in their top-flight match with Leeds of 18 October. It was alleged that the player acted in breach of the rules of the game and/or in a poor manner by engaging in abusive and unacceptable behaviour by spitting at or in the area of Leeds United supporters.”

It continued, “Mejbri later accepted the charge, and the Regulatory Commission handing down a four-game ban and a fine following a hearing. The panel's full explanation for its decisions will be published at a later date.” The team, now 19th in the Premier League table, travel to 12th-place Newcastle on Saturday.

2. Maresca Singles Out Tosin's Mistakes to Make an Argument

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has argued that a lack of experience is not a problem for his club, pointing out how centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo's age did not prevent the 28-year-old from playing poorly in the defeat to Leeds United.

The Italian coach, who oversees the most youthful squad in the Premier League, does not feel that mentality was a factor in their poor result. He made his argument by criticising Tosin, Chelsea's most experienced player on the pitch, who produced an error-strewn display at the back.

“We always talk about a lack of experience after we fail to win,” the coach stated. “When we defeated Barcelona, the draw against Arsenal, no one was talking about older personnel. I understand that if we lose, we are constantly looking for an explanation, but in my view why we lost to Leeds was not down to inexperience, it was because we just weren't at our best.”

He added, “Who was the most senior player on our team on the pitch? It was Tosin. Was he any good? Therefore, it isn't related to his age. It's that those 11 men, they were simply not up to standard.”

Guardiola Says Defence 'Has to Get Better'

Pep Guardiola has stated his team have learnt from a midweek scare against Fulham with the game is now in the past. City survived to claim a 5-4 victory in a remarkable encounter at Craven Cottage, having led 5-1 with almost an hour gone.

Coming after they resisted a comeback to win 3-2 in their previous game, prompting more questions regarding if City are the defensive steel enough to sustain a challenge to leaders Arsenal. “It’s forgotten,” he said. “Good learnings, I hope. In the Premier League, for every team, you have to take onboard what happens performances and bad things and think of what's next.”

“Of course I’m concerned,” Guardiola added. “We try to understand what happened, so as not to concede so many goals. With the three goals scored against Leeds, and the five goals by Fulham it shows our sides, correct? Therefore, we have we have done many positive things. Yet how many attempts had Leeds have? Three? They scored two. That ratio is bad. How many shots on target for Fulham ? Five, six? So, our ratio of chances conceded we can see is high. We have to improve.”

Newcastle Focus New Defenders' Contracts

Newcastle United's recently appointed sporting director, Ross Wilson, has placed contract negotiations with important backline players Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his agenda at St James’ Park. He joined after leaving Nottingham Forest in October and was reassured to learn playmaker Sandro Tonali is on a contract that runs to 2029 and, potentially, 2030.

This allows Wilson to focus on talks for Livramento and Botman's representatives. With the former’s current deal ending in 2027 and Botman's in 2028, the club's talks have assumed some importance.

“The initial three or four days in the job was when I discovered that Sandro’s contract situation is much more secure than I was expecting,” said Wilson. “But it’s well known that we would want to extend Tino’s deal and we would want to renew Sven Botman’s as well. Those discussions are underway.”

Head coach Eddie Howe will be without Botman for the match against Burnley this Saturday, and he expected to remain sidelined for at least a further period.

Nuno Says Paquetá Will Start Against Brighton

West Ham head coach Nuno Espírito Santo has stated that Lucas Paquetá is back to the starting lineup for the side play Brighton on Sunday, after serving his suspension following a red card he received Liverpool.

“It is in the past,” the manager remarked. “I am positive it will not be repeated because he himself acknowledged the error. We discussed it internally. I am positive it is over and it will not be repeated.”

Nuno also understands the intense pressure on his side, currently in the relegation zone ahead of Saturday's matches. “We cannot ignore it,” he said. “It is the situation. We have to confront it. We're fighting for our top-flight status. We cannot shy away from it.”

Arteta Pleased with Striker Deputy Merino

Mikel Merino may keep his place leading the line for Arsenal centre-forward even when the club's usual strikers are fit again. The midfielder has been playing as an emergency No 9 because of fitness issues to Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

Merino found the net for Arsenal’s first goal versus Brentford and set up Bukayo Saka for the second goal in a 2-0 victory which preserved {their|
